i am totally determined that this house will NOT become my nightmare on elm st.
i've scheduled three work parties. one has passed us by already and, for those who watch me on facebook, many have seen the photos i posted from the site with the paneling taken down in the living room and the drop ceiling removed in the bedroom. tomorrow is the next work party, starting at 10am and going until 3pm. pizza and beer provided or, depending on the crowd, we might head over to gramp's instead for polish lunch. drop me a line or give me a buzz if you are local and want to be part of the fun. demolition = awesomesauce
i had a friend of mine who does spray foam insulation come by and give me his honest opinion about what needs to be done. the house is completely uninsulated, leading to colder than coldness in the winter and huge heating bills and hotter than stuffiness in the summer. the good news? much can be done without completely tearing out all the walls or bothering any of the existing knob and tube between circuits. looks like we will air seal the basement rim joists and attic first and then tackle the rest of the house in three stages. he'll get me a formal quote early next week, but from the sound of it and look in his eyes as he rough-estimated, it is in line with what i can afford and what i expected. i am VERY pleased about this. all this insulating will help reduce the street noise and noise between apartments, too.
